Micah Ecumenical Ministries and its partner churches will gather at Fredericksburg Baptist Church for a public memorial service commemorating the anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s assassination. As part of the evening, Micah will present its annual Drum Major for Justice Awards, recognizing local individuals who exemplify Dr. King’s call to servant leadership, justice, and mercy in our community.
This year’s honorees are:
Javonne Kirby, recognized for the innovative ways she has lived into peer recovery, especially the development of Community Canvas, a welcoming, creative space that encourages positive interactions while offering connections to community resources.
Jorge Mendez, honored for his lifetime of advocacy, especially his work with persons of color, low-income individuals and the Latinx community in Stafford and Northern Virginia. He has worked for immigration reform and other social justice issues such as raising the minimum wage, increasing access to health care, promoting affordable housing, and aiding individuals to obtain driver’s licenses.
