Martha Tilston returns to BIRMINGHAM to perform at The Kitchen Garden Cafe
Tuesday 21st October 2025
“Martha Tilston has carved her niche in the English folk scene with sharp, original songs that dissect the modern world. She captures both the harshness and enchantment of life, with the salt of sea air almost palpable.” Neil Spencer, The Observer
From the folk songs she has known since childhood to piano ballads and the odd cheeky bit of trip-hop, Martha Tilston has never been afraid to experiment with her writing and musical parameters. Her songs flow with the journey of her life and creativity, inspired by our interconnectedness with nature and with each other, her open-hearted questioning shines through her music.
To see Martha live is to connect with longed-for parts of ourselves...
Together with her band she has toured the globe, sharing sparkling melodies, filmic soundscapes and earthy basslines. .
Having been surrounded by music most of her life - father Steve Tilston and renowned folk singer Maggie Boyle (step-mother), regularly entertained their friends Bert Jansch, John Renbourn amongst other folk luminaries singing round the family kitchen - Martha’s own musical journey has seen her tour the world, release acclaimed albums, and star in the cult feature film ‘The Tape’ as well as perform Glastonbury’s Acoustic Stage.
She has toured with Damien Rice and recorded with Zero 7 (she was also a featured vocalist on Yeah Ghost) as well as earning a BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards Best Newcomer nomination, all of which has rewarded her with a wide global audience that continues to grow.
Following a sold-out performance at the Minack theatre, in 2022 - the same year the theatre marked the 90th anniversary of its first performance - Martha released her tenth studio album Luminous (2024). This late summer and into autumn, Martha has announced a series of live dates to include the famous St Ives September Festival of Music and she continues with a nationwide tour in the autumn.
