About this Event
Mark Oppenheimer read Judy Blume’s books dozens of times as a child, and his first major essay, published in The New York Times Book Review was about Blume’s enduring influence. With access to unpublished writings, private papers, and 100+ interviews with Judy Blume, along with her friends and associates, Oppenheimer has penned a revealing, captivating, often surprising portrait of this beloved author. Judy Blume: A Life also portrays how her life was affected by the women’s movement, reproductive rights, the rise of divorce, and book banning, and it shows how her activism carries through to the present day - the perfect read for fans of engrossing celebrity memoirs, literary biographies, historical narratives, and nostalgic pop culture.
Mark Oppenheimer has taught at Stanford, Wesleyan, Wellesley, NYU, Boston College, and Yale, where he was the founding director of the Yale Journalism Initiative. He has written for The New York Times, The New Yorker, The Nation, and many more publications. He is the author of five books, including The Newish Jewish Encyclopedia and, most recently, Squirrel Hill: The Tree of Life Synagogue Shooting and the Soul of a Neighborhood.
