About this Event
Mark George KC Memorial Lecture – Wrongful Convictions
The second Mark George KC Memorial Lecture will examine the pressing issue of wrongful convictions, reflecting on recent miscarriages of justice and on the 1984 Orgreave attacks, following the announcement of a public inquiry into police misconduct towards picketing miners at the Orgreave coking plant.
The event will bring together Matt Foot (APPEAL), Pete Weatherby KC, Anna Morris KC and Mira Hammad (Garden Court North Chambers), Chris Peace and Kate Flannery (Orgreave Truth & Justice Campaign) and Professor Claire McGourlay (University of Manchester), all vocal advocates against miscarriages of justice relating to wrongful convictions.
Pete Weatherby KC, who was one of Garden Court North’s founders alongside Mark George KC, will interview Matt Foot on topics including wrongful convictions, the Government’s proposed changes to the right to trial by jury, and a range of topics relating to miscarriages of justice. Chaired by Anna Morris KC and Professor Claire McGourlay, the interview segment will be followed by a panel involving all speakers, and a Q&A.
The Mark George KC Memorial Lecture Series was established by The University of Manchester in partnership with Garden Court North Chambers. The series commemorates the life and contributions Mark made to the legal, campaigning and education communities during his career. Mark George KC, who passed away in December 2022, was Head of Garden Court North Chambers. He became one of he most vocal campaigners calling for an inquiry into the events at Orgreave, and spent years fighting for justice for the Hillsborough families.
