Step back in time to the early 1900s for our March Maritime History on Tap and uncover the thrilling—and sometimes chilling—tales of Captain Dan Seavey, the only Great Lakes captain ever to be charged with piracy. Roaring Dan, as he was known, was infamous for smuggling, theft, and many other nefarious activities on Lake Michigan. Seavey sailed the waters aboard his ship, the Wanderer, and made his home in communities along Big and Little Bays de Noc in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula.
In 2019, Ray Sheldon and Peggy O’Connell (Mr. and Mrs. Captain) discovered that they were living in one of the Great Lakes pirate’s former homes in Escanaba. This revelation sparked a deep dive into Seavey’s past, uncovering some rather disturbing tales and historical documents.
"Fact, Fiction, and a Whole Lot of Folklore" explores Seavey’s exploits and will leave you wondering: was he a ruthless outlaw or just a clever opportunist? Join us as we navigate the life, crimes, and surprisingly humble passing of one of the Great Lakes’ most notorious figures.
