Mariners Marsh Volunteer Landscaping and Cleanup

Help with gardening projects to maintain the health of the trees and native plants at the entrance to Mariners Marsh, a 107 acre former industrial site in North Staten Island re-wilded into pristine wilderness with rare plant and bird finds at every turn.

The former shipyard and iron work facility's ten man-made basins have transformed into ten freshwater ponds next to swamps teeming with pin-oak bordered by a shoreline that holds the sands of time. Running the gamut of Staten Island's aquatic history, visitors can see the exact salt marshes used by camping Lenape still intact as well as catch a glimpse of the boat graveyard at low tide.

M arshes and swamps not only improve water quality and provide shelter for migrating species but prevent flooding and shoreline erosion. They also absorb greenhouse gases by trapping them in the sediment below, and cool the air temperature of the surrounding area. Marshes remain essential to the environmental health of this region.
