About this Event

Medical mystery author Marianna Busching (pen name Emma Aragon) presented her work at Bird in Hand. In the audience was Suzy Vovak, who would provide the inspiration for Marianna's next book, They Called it Zebra.

Now, Marianna and Suzy speak together at Bird in Hand to introduce this latest medical mystery, which follows 44-year-old Charlotte Ambrose on her quest to identify and treat the mysterious disease from which she has been suffering since childhood.

Marianna Busching, a native of Minnesota, is a retired opera singer who has sung in Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center and other venues around the world. She taught at the Peabody Conservatory for 24 years and has now turned to writing poetry and mysteries. Her poems have been frequently published, and she won the Guy Owen Award presented by The Southern Poetry Review. They Called It Zebra is the 5th novel in a series.

Suzy Vovak was born in Harrogate, North Yorkshire, England and has resided in Maryland since she was an infant. Currently, she makes Aberdeen her hometown, where she lives on the Bush River with her loving, supportive husband of 28 years, and their two adorable cats. She is the Director of Client Communication for a local wealth management firm, utilizing her writing skills and natural creativity for newsletter and website development, among other tasks. From a young age, Suzy has been considered a "medical mystery", enduring a multitude of difficult and painful experiences and surgeries. At the age of 43, and after years of searching and personal advocacy, she received a diagnosis, finally learning the name of the rare syndrome she lives with. Ever since, she has pushed for further education and recognition around this little known disorder so that others like her may receive their diagnoses much earlier and receive access to better care and greater understanding.
