On 11 June at 19:00, the exhibition “Repression and Free Will” will officially close at the Art Foundation Anagi.
As part of the closing programme, Mariam Natroshvili and Detu Jincharadze’s video work “The Revenant is Going to Come” will be screened in the Foundation’s Cinema Hall. The work is conceptually linked to the exhibition “Repression and Free Will.”

The video work brings together two temporal layers: a present constructed through CGI technology and a reconstructed past based on archival material.
From the artists’ statement:
“The video explores and observes what remains unfinished – what haunts the present, is endlessly repeated, and denies the future any rest.
📹 The footage repeatedly returns to the city and its buildings, in particular the Parliament building, constructed in 1938; its façade was added in 1953 and it was later burned during the civil war. The Parliament stands on the site of a former military church built during the Russian Empire to commemorate victory over the North Caucasian mountain peoples.
By bringing together events separated in time, often imperceptible or forgotten connections are formed. All events take place in Tbilisi, the capital of Georgia – from the loss of independence in 1921 to its restoration in 1991.
The repressions of 1936-1938 and the events of 9 March 1956 in Tbilisi are narrated through footage of Stalin’s funeral rally. The video also includes the events of 9 April 1989, independence, and the civil war that began the same year.
Some of these events and their participants have been forgotten or denied, while others remain part of contemporary Georgian identity. Searching for their connections, remembering, and observing repetition creates the possibility of speaking with ghosts.”
The exhibition “Repression and Free Will” explores the mechanisms of restriction of creative freedom under the Soviet system, as well as artists’ resistance.

“ვიდეო იკვლევს და აკვირდება იმას, რაც არ დასრულებულა და აწმყოზეა ადევნებული, მუდმივად მეორდება და მომავალს მოსვენებას უკარგავს.
📹 კადრები ხშირად უბრუნდება ქალაქსა და მის შენობებს, განსაკუთრებით პარლამენტის შენობას, რომელიც 1938 წელს აშენდა; 1953 წელს წინა ფასადი დაემატა, შემდეგ კი - სამოქალაქო ომში გადაიწვა. პარლამენტის შენობა რუსეთის იმპერიის დროს, ჩრდილოეთ კავკასიის მთიელ ხალხებზე გამარჯვების აღსანიშნავად აგებული სამხედრო ტაძრის ადგილზე დგას.
დროში დაშორებული მოვლენების ერთად ჩვენებით, მათ შორის ხან შეუმჩნეველი, ხან კი მივიწყებული კავშირი მყარდება. ყველა მოვლენა თბილისში, საქართველოს დედაქალაქში ხდება - 1921 წლის დამოუკიდებლობის დაკარგვიდან, 1991 წლის დამოუკიდებლობის დაბრუნებამდე.

ნაჩვენებია 1989 წლის 9 აპრილის მოვლენები, დამოუკიდებლობის მოპოვება და იმავე წელს დაწყებული სამოქალაქო ომი.
