Marginalised Bodies with Phyllis Christopher
Part of Franki Raffles: Viewpoints
Wed 15 Jan 2025 | 13:00-14:00
Northumbria University Gallery (Level 3)
Gateshead-based, US-born photographer Phyllis Christopher, whose career has focused on documenting marginalised and politicised bodies – notably the lesbian community in San Francisco – discusses her work.
Phyllis Christopher conducts workshops, co-facilitates a community darkroom at the NewBridge project, and continues to document the LGBTQ+ community. The former photo editor of On Our Backs magazine, her book Dark Room: San Francisco Sex and Protest, 1988-2002, was published by Book Works in 2022. Her work was featured in the retrospective: On Our Backs: An Archive at The NewBridge Project, Newcastle (2017) and Nottingham Contemporary in the group show Still I Rise: Feminisms, Gender, Resitance (2019). Her work was the subject of a major retrospective organised between Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art, Gateshead, and Grand Union, Birmingham in 2021.
