Poesy Shines is a nostalgic experience for adults seeking to skip the club scene for a melodious tour of the African diaspora. Blues, gospel, jazz, rock and reggae are interlaced
beautifully in each performance and then kissed with soul-stirring poetry. Atria Shinette was
first inspired to develop a poetry-set-to-music production when she played classical piano
amongst Zydeco and Southern Soul story-tellers in south Louisiana. Drummer Aaron Palmer
taught himself to play drums as a child in Jamaica and has toured internationally over the last
35 years. Aaron and bassist Efferin Fuse became acquainted through their church. Efferin was
born in Florida, but grew up in Buffalo playing gospel music and hiphop. Jake Jurewicz is the
group’s lead guitarist and saxophonist. He received formal training in jazz guitar and audio
engineering at Capital University in Columbus, Ohio. His volunteer work with PUSH Buffalo
exposed him the revolutionary poetry of Dr. Majadi Baruti. Dr. Baruti’s first musical influence
was his great-grandfather, Delta Blues legend Johnny Shines. These dynamic artisans are
dedicated to authentic musicianship, community activism, and the spoken word.
