The talk I"ll be giving is titled, "Of the Making of Many Books, There Is No End: Book Arts Education in the 21st Century." I gave a version of this talk at the annual meeting of the Baltimore Bibliophiles in November last fall. Here's a paragraph of summary:
"Casey Smith, Executive Director of Frederick Book Arts Center (FBAC), will give a lecture on March 4th that traces the history of book arts education in America from the 1950s to the present day. His talk will look at amateur hobbyist groups, college and university programs, and stand-alone "book arts" centers like FBAC. The past twenty or thirty years has seen an explosion of interest in the intersections of books and art, yet the field still struggles to define itself for the general public. Accompanied by digital slides, Casey's talk will draw attention to the continued vibrancy of book arts in America and the role of book arts educators in both preserving tradition and finding innovative new ways to keep the field fresh and challenging for future generations of book artists."
Casey earned his doctorate in English Literature from Indiana University in 2006 and continues to research, write, and lecture on 19th and 20th-century print-culture history. For the past five years, he’s been the Chair of Liberal Arts at the Delaware College of Art and Design. He taught at the Corcoran College of Art + Design and George Washington University from 1997 to 2016, where he led the curricular development of the innovative “Art and Book” MA program. Casey brings to FBAC a lifelong dedication to promoting book arts education. He would love to hear your ideas about FBAC’s role in the artistic life of greater Frederick.
