Transforming of the Irish Image - with Marion Casey
It only took a century or so for phrases like “No Irish Need Apply” to segue into “Kiss Me, I’m Irish” in American popular culture. Casey’s book The Green Space examines the factors contributing to remaking the Irish image from a downtrodden and despised people to universally acclaimed. According to Casey, as “Irish” evolved between the mid-19th and mid-20th centuries, a visual and rhetorical expanse for representing ethnicity opened up. In this evolution, both Ireland and the U.S. were linked to how versions of “Irish” were deployed over time—was it a straightforward noun about a specific people, or was it a loose, malleable adjective only slightly connected to actual ethnic identity?
Marion R. Casey is a clinical professor of Irish studies at Glucksman Ireland House NYU and an affiliated faculty member in the Department of History at New York University. She is co-editor of Making the Irish American: History and Heritage of the Irish in the United States (2006).

Irish Schools Collection - with Jill Williams
In the late 1930s, more than 50,000 children in 5,000 primary schools in the Irish Free State were enlisted to collect folklore in their home districts. This included oral history, topographical information, folktales and legends, riddles and proverbs, games and pastimes, trades and crafts. The children recorded this material from their parents, grandparents, and neighbors, and it can now be found—and searched—in the Irish Schools’ Collection at www.duchas.ie. Jill Williams will discuss this underused resource and encourage our members to delve into it.

Jill Williams has been teaching family history courses for over two decades. She was a longtime volunteer in the library of the Irish Genealogical Research Society in London and is a fellow of the society.
