About this Event

Be A Kid with Indoor Rock Climbing at the Hive!

Get ready for an exciting morning of indoor rock climbing at The Hive, just for BIPOC kids and their families. This fun, high-energy event centers movement, confidence, and community, giving BIPOC kids the chance to try something new in a safe, welcoming space designed just for them. Families will connect with the MAR community, build new friendships, and share an unforgettable experience together—making this a truly unique opportunity to be part of something special.

When: Sunday, March 15, from 8:00 am - 10:00 am

Where: 11125 124 St #101-B, Surrey

Event Details:

  • Children must be supervised by their adults at all times.
  • Caregiver participation is welcomed and encouraged!
  • You are welcome to bring your own snacks. Please, no nuts.
  • The required waiver will be sent a few days before the event. Please don’t forget to complete the waiver for everyone attending.

Pricing: Each adult and child in attendance (excluding babes in arms) must have a ticket for the event. We have a range of ticket options available to support making the event financially accessible for families.

Receiving as Resistance (Free – Limited Spots Available)

  • Because access is a right, not a reward. This tier is for those who need full financial support. We know that asking for help in an individualistic system is a radical act. Taking up space, resting, and receiving are all forms of resistance. We offer this tier with love.

Limited spots available. Please only choose this option if you truly need it.

Practicing Equity (50% Reduced Rate: $5)

  • For those with some capacity who want to honour the work while easing the burden. You’re navigating a complex mix of barriers and privileges and showing up with what you can. This tier helps us cover some costs and sustain the work, while keeping it accessible to others. It reflects your commitment to equity-in-action.

Redistributing Power (Full Price: $10)

  • This is what it actually costs to run the program. From tech and tools to staff and stipends, this rate sustains the full offering and ensures fair pay for the racialized people holding this space. Too often, BIPOC are asked to work for free. We reject that norm. This tier is what it means to share the load.

Reparative Giving (Pay-It-Forward / Community Sustainer: $20)

More than a donation, this is an act of repair. When you give beyond the full cost, and you’re not just funding a program, you’re investing in the emotional labour of BIPOC leaders, in community access, and in a future where justice is the norm, not the exception. This is reciprocity. This is love that liberates.

A Note on Sliding Scale:

We use equity pricing to honour the truth that financial access is deeply shaped by oppressive systems like colonialism, capitalism, racism, and ableism. This model invites responsibility and relationship, not guilt.

If you’re unsure which tier is right for you, consider your access to income, generational wealth, support systems, and systemic advantage. Then choose the tier that aligns with both your circumstances and your commitments.

No shame. No saviours. Just shared liberation.

You MUST register all participants (kids and guardians, even if not participating in the activity). People who have not registered may be refused access to the event.

Please inform us of any accessibility or mobility requirements upon registration, and we will accommodate to the best of our ability.

Indemnity Information:

Accidents arising from recreation activities occasionally happen. By attending the event, you agree to indemnify and save harmless Moms Against Racism, including their officials, officers, employees, and agents from any claim, lawsuit, liability, debt, demand, loss, or judgment (including costs, defence expense, and interest) whatsoever and howsoever arising either directly or indirectly as a result of participating in this event. You also agree to waive all rights of subrogation or recourse against the Hive Surrey and their affiliates as a result of participating in this event.

Plain language: Participate at your own risk.

About the Be A Kid Program

Every child deserves to play freely, to laugh loudly, and to explore the wonders of the world in a joyfully inquisitive way. Every child deserves the opportunity to try something new, to connect with nature, and to do so without the judgmental and scrutinizing gaze of the people around them.

Unfortunately, for Black, Indigenous, and Children of Colour they often don’t get these opportunities.

These children often face barriers when it comes to… being a kid. Barriers to participating in activities like finances, travel, time, lack of knowledge, stigma, fear for safety, and even just feeling like they’re going to stick out or be the only racialized kid there.

Be a Kid events are
  • Fun and welcoming
  • Open to children who identifyheritage as BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, or a Child of Colour) and their immediate families/caregivers. White presenting kids with racial heritage, and white family members/caregivers are warmly welcomed.
  • Intended to build community. Come ready to meet and talk with new people.

Thank you to our 2025/2026 funder!

We acknowledge the financial support of the Province of British Columbia.

We are so grateful to be running another year of the Be a Kid program with thanks to the Province of BC. This program supports our members, the public, and their racialized kids in creating community. Be a Kid helps to create opportunities for Black, Indigenous and Children of Colour to connect with each other, in a psychologically and culturally safer environment, while participating in an activity they may otherwise not.
