About this Event

Be A Kid with an afternoon of science experiments!

This November, we're teaming up with Science Venture for an exciting afternoon of hands-on science, just for BIPOC kids and their families! From the mysteries of biology to the wonders of tech, we’ll be experimenting, building, exploring, and discovering a whole world of cool stuff.

Think hands-on experiments, cool discoveries, and interactive activities that bring science to life. It’s science you can touch, explore, and get excited about!

Come curious. Leave inspired. Don’t miss it — seriously.

When: Saturday, November 15, from 1:00 PM - 3:00 PM

Where: 3800 Finnerty Rd, Victoria, BC

Event Details:

  • Children must be supervised by their adults at all times.
  • Caregiver participation is welcomed and encouraged!
  • You are welcome to bring your own snacks. Please, no nuts.
  • The event will take place in the D wing of MacLaurin, in rooms D010 and D016. You can use this map to help locate us: UVic Campus Map

Pricing:

With much gratitude to Science Ventures, we can offer this event by donation. There is no set admission fee; however, each adult and child in attendance (excluding babes in arms) must have a ticket for the event.

Because Eventbrite doesn’t allow multiple tickets per single donation, each person needs to be registered separately. You’re welcome to choose a donation amount that works best for you for each ticket. Thank you for contributing an amount that is comfortable for you.

Your generous donation helps support Be A Kid events and enables us to offer more activities throughout the year. Every contribution, big or small, makes a difference and helps keep this community program running strong.

Please inform us of any accessibility or mobility requirements upon registration, and we will accommodate to the best of our ability.

If you have any questions or concerns, please reach out to us at .

Indemnity Information:

Accidents arising from recreation activities occasionally happen. By attending the event, you agree to indemnify and save harmless Moms Against Racism, including their officials, officers, employees and agents from any claim, lawsuit, liability, debt, demand, loss or judgement (including costs, defence expense and interest) whatsoever and howsoever arising either directly or indirectly as a result of participating in this event. You also agree to waive all rights of subrogation or recourse against Science Venture and their affiliates as a result of participating in this event.

Plain language: Participate at your own risk.

About the Be A Kid Program

Every child deserves to play freely, to laugh loudly, and to explore the wonders of the world in a joyfully inquisitive way. Every child deserves the opportunity to try something new, to connect with nature, and to do so without the judgmental and scrutinizing gaze of the people around them.

Unfortunately, for Black, Indigenous and Children of Colour, they often don’t get these opportunities.

These children often face barriers when it comes to… being a kid. Barriers to participating in activities like finances, travel, time, lack of knowledge, stigma, fear for safety, and even just feeling like they’re going to stick out or be the only racialized kid there.

Be a Kid events are
  • Fun and welcoming
  • Open to children who identity as BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, or a Child of Colour) and their immediate families/caregivers. White presenting kids with racial hertitage and white family members/caregivers are warmly welcomed.
  • Intended to build community. Come ready to meet and talk with new people.

Thank you to our 2024/2025 funder!

We acknowledge the financial support of the Province of British Columbia.

We are so grateful to be running another year of the Be a Kid program with thanks to the Province of BC. This program supports our members, the public, and their racialized kids in creating community. Be a Kid helps to create opportunities for Black, Indigenous and Children of Colour to connect with each other, in a psychologically and culturally safer environment, while participating in an activity they may otherwise not.

And a BIG thank you to for partnering with us to bring such a meaningful opportunity to our Be A Kid families.
