Maps and the Emergence of the Filipino Nation
About this Event
The Philippines is a young nation with an old history. Its long and complicated history can be read, partly, through maps and cartography. From the 16th to the 21st centuries the evolution of the geographic shape of the archipelago reflects the idea and emergence of the Filipino nation.
This event is hosted in partnership with the Philippine Consulate General in Vancouver.
The SFU School for International Studies’ Consular Conversations series is a monthly public forum featuring discussions with members of the Consular Corps in Vancouver. These conversations are moderated by Dr. Ricardo Arredondo, an IS Adjunct Professor and Consul General of Argentina. The goal is to bring together the Consular Corps of British Columbia for public lectures that encourage dialogue on issues that transcend borders, explore inspiring topics, and cultivate connections. We invite members of the consular corps of British Columbia and the Simon Fraser University community to join us.
Speaker Biography
AMBETH R. OCAMPO is the Philippines’ foremost public historian and preeminent scholar on José Rizal. For his immense contributions to cultural heritage, he has been conferred the Order of Lakandula (Rank of Bayani), the Presidential Medal of Merit, Japan’s Fukuoka Academic Prize, and knighthoods from France and Spain.
He is the Senator Gil J. Puyat Professor of History at the Ateneo de Manila University and the Senator Aquilino Pimentel, Jr. Professor of Governance at the University of Makati. A prolific author of over 35 books, he pens Looking Back, the longest-running historical column for the Philippine Daily Inquirer. He is also the former Chairman of both the National Commission for Culture and the Arts and the National Historical Commission of the Philippines.
Formerly the Benedictine monk Dom Ignacio Maria, OSB, he spends his lucid moments moderating growing Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube channels.
