Tune into the many voices of the Sawkill River through this immersive field recording workshop, led by Filipinx nature recordist Zaneta.
About this Event

In this workshop, participants will listen to multiple perspectives of the Sawkill River, the subtle bends, dips, and fluctuations in flow - essentially tuning into the many voices of this beloved water body. Participants will have the opportunity to listen with hydrophones and portable digital recorders, exploring different immersive field recording techniques and spatial listening.

Led by Filipinx interdisciplinary sound artist and nature recordist Zaneta, participants will also explore listening and field recording as a ritual of connection and reciprocity with local lands and waters, informed by the artist’s cultural traditions.

A limited number of digital recorders, headphones, and hydrophones will be available. Participants are highly encouraged to bring their own digital recorders and phones to practice field recording on their own devices.

Trail Accessibility: We will be accessing the Sawkill River through the Comeau Property. Restrooms are available and parking is located at trail entrance. The path is relatively flat but there are many thick, exposed tree roots on the ground. This is approximately a 1/2 mile walk, then we slope down to the river bank, which is completely made of smooth river stones.

BIO

Zaneta is a Filipinx interdisciplinary sound artist, nature recordist, and medium whose work brings communities into close relationship with local wilderness through listening, sound, and ritual as sacred expressions of ecological stewardship and care.

Drawing from the work of their lola sa tuhód (great-grandmother) as a hilot healer in Iloilo, Philippines, and her multi-modal ways of communing with the land, Zaneta weaves field recordings, environmental studies, activism, sound art, community art, storytelling, painting, ritual, and channeling to create experiences of deep communion with the more-than-human world. Experiences that build conscious connection to local lands and wildlife, and sparks stewardship through evolving community exchanges between land and people.

Zaneta’s work has been presented in spaces such as the Brooklyn Museum, Los Angeles Natural History Museum, the Climate Imaginarium on Governor’s Island, and featured on WKNY Radio Kingston, and Wave Farm Radio. Their work has been awarded grants by the Brooklyn Arts Council, Arts Westchester, Arts Council of Rockland and in 2025 they participated in the Strange Foundation Residency.

Zaneta currently serves as the environmental artist-in-residence at Marydell Faith and Life Center at Hook Mountain in Nyack, NY. Their upcoming album and book, Invitations from the Land: the Zena Highwoods (2026), was created in partnership with the Woodstock Land Conservancy and will be released with a live premiere September 2026 in Woodstock.
