Bio: Performance artist Linda Mary Montano (born 1942 in Saugerties, NY) is a seminal figure in contemporary feminist performance art. Working since the mid-1960s, her work has been critical in the development of performance and video by, for, and about women.
Montano's practice explores the boundaries between art and life through everyday activities, actions, and communication as rite and ritual. Her strongly autobiographical work often addresses personal and spiritual transformation. Early performances include "Handcuff" (1973) and "Three Day Blindfold" (1974).
Performance artist Linda Mary Montano is known for her groundbreaking work 14 Years of Living Art (1984–1998), which was based on the Chakra teachings of Shri Brahmananda Saraswati. During this extended endurance practice, she lived in her home wearing strictly monochromatic clothing and devoted herself to meditative practice. She also provided monthly "Art/Life Counseling" at the New Museum in New York.
In 1983-1984, Montano collaborated with Taiwanese performance artist Tehching Hsieh on Art/Life: One Year Performance, a remarkable year-long work during which the two artists were bound together by rope 24 hours a day. Since 1975, Montano has used video as a practice, with her videos edited and animated for the last 20 years by Tobe Carey.
Montano has been featured at The New Museum in New York, MOCA in San Francisco, and the ICA in London. Her award-winning work continues to explore spiritual transformation, empathy, and the dissolution of boundaries between artistic practice and lived experience.
