Mapped - Art Exhibition by Marie Muir

Story telling has always been part of my artistic practice. As a trained Graphic Designer, much of my previous work has been about telling stories for others. The ‘Mapped’ series is my opportunity to share my own stories by blending moments in time along with the structure and formality of OS maps. Maps are fascinating, they can tell us about the history of a place and lead us, via bizarre place names and graphic icons to new, undiscovered moments and imaginings. The map used and image created are interlinked by place. The red dot on each of the images indicates which area of the map the picture refers to. I work directly from my own photos and from spending time in the space itself. The challenge comes in finding the right map and ‘memory’, often these are not clear until I actually start working. Text is also an important aspect to the image produced, sometimes I have in mind a saying, quote or poem and that helps frame the resulting image. Latterly I have also been exploring the sky, which of course is not part of an OS map. I imagine how the ‘National Grid Reference System’ might be expanded to include the vast Lincolnshire skies, with each square being slightly different to its neighbour.
