Join us at the Urban Garden Center to learn how to start your Spring garden!
About this Event

General admission garden exhibits are free and run from 9:00 - 11:30 am. Walk-in visitors are welcome.

  • MANGO RECIPE CONTEST | 9:30 - 10:30 am: Enter the mango recipe contest to win a great prize (tinyurl.com/mangocontest2026)! Enter to win a sampler plate of tasty contest entries. Winning tickets will be called at 10:30AM (must be present to win).
  • LEARN TO GROW MANGO TREES - TALK & DEMO | 9:00 - 11:30 am: Makaha Mangoes owner Mark Suiso will give an overview and tips on how to grow mangos in Hawaiʻi. Mango variety tasting for those that are committed to growing your own mango trees. Limited supply of grafted mango plants for sale.
  • MANGO NECTAR TASTING: Mango nectar samples at the juice bar, while they last.
  • HERB PROPAGATION: Learn about propagating herbs from cuttings. Make and take home a rooted plant cutting to start your own herb garden.
  • 4H PROGRAM YOUTH ACTIVITIES| 9:00 - 11:30 am: Fun youth activities that will pique your youthʻs interest in gardening.
  • OCEAN MUSIC ACTION HARP PERFORMANCES | 9:30 & 10:30: Join Ocean Music Action at Second Saturdays in the Garden for a performance of music inspired by animals and nature. Harpist Megan Conley will share music and information about how to help protect native flora and fauna.
  • WATERWISE HOME IDEA GARDEN TOURS: On-going tours of a beautifully landscaped xeric garden.
  • GARDEN OPEN HOUSE: Visit the Master Gardener Training Garden if you need gardening advice or inspiration. Whether you’re curious about growing vegetables and flowers to attract pollinators, dealing with pests and diseases, or improving your soil with amendments and fertilizers, we’re here to help.
  • OʻAHU INVASIVE SPECIES COMMITTEE: Learn about the top invasive species on Oʻahu. Little Fire Ant (LFA) delivers a painful sting and can cause blindness in pets. Look for small, rust-colored ants that bite. Catching them early is key! Information will be available about other invasive species such as CRB.
  • HAWAIʻI ANT LAB: Learn how the Hawaiʻi Ant Lab staff can help you to manage Little Fire Ant (LFA) infestations in residential neighborhoods. Stop the ant!
  • GOT A PLANT QUESTION? Master Gardeners will be on hand to answer your gardening questions. CTAHR seeds will be for sale.

Workshop tickets required for the following activities (includes general admission):

  • Growing Eggplant for the Home Gardener | 9:00 - 10:00 am (free): Learn how to grow eggplant, save and grow seeds, and recognize and implement organic control of pests and diseases. Reduce your food insecurity and share your harvest with your neighbors.
  • Fruit Orchard Tour | 9:30, 10:00 AM (free): Take a tour of the CARES Waiawa orchard’s mango collection with volunteers from the Fruit Hui and receive a leaflet of “Mango Varietal Selection ar a Glance.”
  • Heat Tolerant Plants for a Resilient Garden | 9:30 - 10:30 AM (free) . Gardening in the tropics is different from other climates. It is important to select plants, edible fruits, vegetables and shrubs for landscaping, sustainability and resiliency, especially during the hottest months of the year.
  • Composting at Home Made Easy | 11:00 - 11:45 AM (free): Learn how to create a nutrient-rich organic compost for your garden in a simple Green Waste Pod. We’ll show you how it’s done start to finish, then together we’ll screen a freshly-harvested batch and send you home with a free sample!

  • All guests must sign a UH consent waiver at the registration area upon arrival. Parents/guardians must provide supervision of minors at all times during the event to ensure their safety and security.
  • Please wear appropriate attire: shoes and sun protection.
  • Bring drinking water to stay hydrated in the heat.
  • Only guide dogs are allowed. No pets allowed.
