The Premier League is back! The pick of the fixtures for the opening weekend is Manchester United hosting Arsenal at Old Trafford. The two titans have become one of the biggest rivalries since the '90s, as the two clubs regularly competed for Premier League and FA Cup titles.
United had their worst league campaign in Premier League history in 2024/25, finishing in 15th position, losing 18 of their league games, and staggeringly only achieving half of the points total amassed by last season's Champions, Liverpool. The club has invested heavily over the summer break, bringing in three top forwards. Matheus Cunha from Wolves, Bryan Mbeumo from Brentford, and Benjamin Šeško from German Bundesliga side, RB Leipzig have all arrived in an attempt to put the Red Devils back in the mix for European football in 2025/26.
Arsenal have finished 2nd place in the Premier League for three successive seasons now. They managed to finish ahead of Manchester City for the first time in many years, but fell 10 points short of Champions, Liverpool. Manager, Mikel Arteta, has also delved into the market in the summer, securing several new players to bolster their squad for the upcoming season. Key signings include striker Viktor Gyökeres (Sporting CP), winger Noni Madueke (Chelsea), defender Cristhian Mosquera (Valencia), and defensive midfielders Christian Norgaard (Brentford), and Martin Zubimendi (Real Sociedad). The Gunners will be hoping it's enough to bring a first Premier League title to the club since 2003!
This match will be the 244th competitive clash between the two sides. United have won 102 of them, Arsenal have taken 90, and the remaining 51 have finished level. The two teams met three times last season. In the league, Arsenal won 2-0 at the Emirates Stadium. Today's fixture last season finished 1-1, the same score at the end of the FA Cup 3rd Round tie, which United won out on penalties.
