Session 1: Human Factors within the Operating Theatre

Info: This session will focus on the principles of human factors to deepen the audiences understanding of the interplay between staff and the systems of work in the context of unintentional error causality.
The session will utilise a series of real errors to bring to life the complexity of healthcare delivery and role of safe system design in protecting both staff and patients from unintentional error within the operating room environment. The session will conclude by describing several limitations of human performance and the essential requirement to created human performance optimised workloads and role expectations.

Pre consent phase,
Consent phase, post consent phase and post theatre phase. LEARNING OBJECTIVES: 1. Develop an understanding of the role of the Organ Donation Nurse.

2. Develop an awareness of Organ Donation as an option at End of Life.

3. Understand how Organ Donation works in the UK.

Session 3: Not Small Adults - Delivering Safer Paediatric Perioperative Care
Host: Dr Beth Smithson

Info: Children undergoing surgery present unique physiological, anatomical, and emotional challenges that differ significantly from adult patients. Despite this, perioperative practices are often adapted from adult models, which can introduce risks if not carefully modified.
This session will explore the key differences in paediatric perioperative care, highlighting how these impact assessment, anaesthesia, communication, and safety. Drawing on current evidence and real-world clinical examples, it will provide practical strategies to support perioperative teams in delivering safe, child-centred care.
Attendees will gain insights into recognising risk, adapting perioperative processes, and improving outcomes for paediatric patients within both specialist and non-specialist settings.

Delegates will gain practical insights into reducing contamination risks, supporting staff compliance, and strengthening theatre-based infection prevention culture across the multidisciplinary team.

Session 5: Enhanced Recovery After HPB Surgery in Postanaesthetic Care Unit
Host: Dannielle Stewart

Info: This session outlines the benefits of adopting Enhanced Recovery pathways pre-operatively, intraoperatively and in early post-op recovery (PACU) through the lens of the pancreaticoduodenectomy (Whipples Procedure) at University Hospital Southampton. Recovery Educator Danni will explore the evolution of the procedure from multi day ICU stay to overnight in Surgical High Dependency in the last 7 years on the back of multidisciplinary commitment to enhanced recovery.
