MANA Trio: Portraits and Resonances

Called a “groundbreaking ensemble” by the Los Angeles Chronicle, the Bay Area-based MANA Trio presents a series of musical portraits that trace the expressive breadth of the saxophone across style, character, and history. 

Johann Joachim Quantz’s Trio in C minor opens the concert with a baroque classic of the trio repertoire. From this point of departure, the program unfolds into increasingly vivid sound worlds, with imagery and storytelling coming to light.

Erland von Koch’s Concerto Piccolo highlights the lyricism and agility of all three members of the ensemble, while Carl Anton Wirth’s Jephthah: Invocation and Dance draws on dramatic legend and ritualistic energy for its musical landscape. Erwin Dressel’s Duo Concerto expands the narrative scope through bold gestures and singing interplay between the two saxophone soloists. The program concludes with two works by Astor Piazzolla.

The MANA Trio includes Michael Hernandez, soprano saxophone; Michael Mortarotti, alto saxophone; and Philip Jung, piano.

• Seating is general admission. Attendees are encouraged to reserve tickets. Walk-ins are permitted based on ticket availability. Unclaimed tickets will be released 5 minutes before the concert start time.

• Performances and screenings in Tateuchi Hall are suitable for ages 7 and up. To ensure the best experience for all guests, children should be able to sit quietly during the performance (approx. one hour).
