Mamalluca Chilean Cinema Series USA, returns in celebration of Chilean Heritage Cinema in an homage to Chilean filmmaker Nieves Yankovic.
About this Event

This year, Mamalluca, Chilean Cinema Series USA, 8th edition, expands its scope by celebrating the Golden Age of Chilean Cinema—which serves both, as a mirror to the national identity and a living visual archive of the country’s collective memory and culture.

With this year’s edition, Mamalluca offers the opportunity to witness and learn customs, social transformations and life in a different era. This year’s productions form part of the cornerstone of a cinema that was fundamental to the development of modern-day Chilean filmmakers and the industry.

Over the course of two days, we will also honor Nieves Yankovic—a Chilean actress, director and documentalist, by featuring the following: Romance de Medio Siglo (full-feature film), in the role of an actress; and two of her prestigious documentaries Isla de Pascua and Andacollo.

Day 2 Program

Isla de Pascua (Nieves Yankovic and Jorge Di Lauro, 1965)

A poetic gaze at the history and mysteries of Easter Island (Rapa Nui), through its landscapes, mythical sculptures, festivals, and ceremonies, featuring abundant songs and dances that become the true guides of the documentary. This film was restored in 2018 by the National Film Library of Chile (Cineteca Nacional de Chile) in its digital laboratory, based on copies deposited in 2014 by Gisela Cares, daughter of the iconic couple of documentarians. The film was edited in 2K and then restored frame-by-frame.

Isla de Pascua is a film from the Archive of the National Film Library of Chile (Cineteca Nacional de Chile).

Our gratitude to Gisela Cares Reyes for authorizing the exhibition of this important production

Andacollo (Nieves Yankovic and Jorge Di Lauro, 1958)

A meticulous record of the celebration of the Virgin of Andacollo, a festival held each year from December 23 to 27 in the city of Andacollo (Coquimbo, Chile).

It covers everything from the arrival of pilgrims and the procession of the Virgin to the dances and penances, among other activities.

The documentary Andacollo was provided by the University of Chile Film Library (Cineteca Universidad de Chile).
