Multidisciplinary artist and composer JG Everest (Lateduster, Roma di Luna, Gold Minefield) hosted and curated Making Music, a conversation series at the Whole Music Club (University of Minnesota) and the Walker Art Center from 2005 to 2013. Over the course of those 8 years, Everest interviewed dozens of local and nationally acclaimed musicians, including Alan Sparhawk, Jason Moran, Dessa, Sean Daley aka Slug (Atmosphere), Christy Costello, David Longstreth (Dirty Projectors) Jeremy Messersmith, Mankwe Ndosi, Dan Wilson, Andrew Bird, Lazerbeak, P.O.S., Lori Barbero (Babes in Toyland), David Harrington (Kronos Quartet), Dave King (The Bad Plus, Happy Apple), and many more.
In 2026, Making Music has returned with a renewed mission and a new host, longtime radio personality and MN music champion Mark Wheat. The revived series launched with a conversation featuring acclaimed musician and multidisciplinary artist Channy Leaneagh, reintroducing audiences to the show's tradition of exploring the creative process through thoughtful, in-depth conversations.
Now, for the second installment of the relaunched series, Mark Wheat sits down with original Making Music host JG Everest for a special conversation about Everest's musical career, his outdoor "Sound Gardens" installations, the origins and impact of the series, the value of engaging artists in meaningful dialogue about their work, and the evolving landscape of Minnesota music. The event serves as both a reflection on the series' legacy and a celebration of its next chapter.
