An Election Day Workshop for NYC Educators

Literacy curricula were not designed with all your students in mind. Let's design literacy instruction so it actually can.

In this full-day, hands-on workshop, we'll explore how to truly support students who may struggle to access literacy instruction: students with IEPs, 504s, and other neurodivergent students with executive functioning challenges or attention differences.

We'll work to understand students' attentional, academic, and social-emotional needs. Then we'll create focused supports you can embed into whatever reading and writing program you're already using—no matter the curriculum.

Come ready to make and take what you need. We'll use digital tools including Google Slides templates and interactive graphic organizers, and we'll create physical supports with card stock, a laminator, and velcro on hand.

Join me to learn how to build in:

• Structure — with clear schedules and routines
• Clarity — using explicit instruction and visuals
• Engagement — including interactive reflection activities
• Support — with a variety of executive functioning and academic scaffolds

You'll leave with strategies, materials, and structures you can use the next day.

Participants receive:

• A certificate of completion for 5 contact hours of PD
• A choice of Aaron's Quick Reference Guides for instruction

Workshops are limited to 20 participants to ensure participants have the materials, attention, and opportunities to interact that allow them to make this a valuable learning experience.

The location in Downtown Brooklyn is accessible by many trains: 2 /3 / A / C / F / R / B / Q. Parking is also available.

About your facilitator

Aaron Lanou (he/him) is an educational consultant supporting schools and organizations to reach all kids using inclusive, strengths-based practices. Through the lens of Universal Design for Learning, Aaron coaches educators to support autistic and neurodivergent students with academic, executive functioning, and social support needs. He serves as a member of Carol Gray’s Team Social Stories and the Delta Air Lines Advisory Board on Disability. Aaron was previously an NYC Public Schools special education teacher, adjunct faculty at Hunter College and NYU, and Executive Director of the Nest Program at NYU, leading the nation’s largest inclusion program for autistic students.
