About the Workshop
Sand as a Liquid Solid calls upon us to challenge the agency of control between human creator , robotic creator and the nature of matter. In its granular behaviour the ‘Liquid Solid’ of Sand provides an unpredictability that invites the maker to renegotiate the rules of behaviour and agent of control within the creative process. It redefines the roles of computational simulation and sensing , robotic fabrication and material behaviour. We combine the material driven fabrication and crafting by state change of the liquid solid, to the rule based precision of automation.
In Studio INI and our research with our students at the AADRL, Nassia INGLESSIS co-opts automation across material-driven processes to craft traditional matter and structure, into dynamic systems across scales and with a capacity to act as an interface to other contexts.
We will use:
- a robotic arm ,
- a block of sand
- a image sensor
- Sand solidification methods
To sculpt sand into forms. The process and final forms will hold evidence of the delicate tensions between the predictable and unpredictable.

“I disobey the notion that in an era of vast computational capacity and constructed intelligence, we architect our matter to be static; to be a rigid ‘shelter’ for the human body, disparate from its boundless mind and its place within nature’s ecosystem.”
Nassia Inglessis, is a Greek artist, based in Athens and London, that couples scientific research with public engagement. Her artworks act as a radical platform of direct provocation to disobey the boundaries of our physical existence and intelligence. In her practice, Studio INI, she co-opts automation across material-driven processes to craft traditional matter and structure, into human-actuated kinetic sculptures of architectural scale. These installations in their amplified capacity to transform evoke experience beyond any boundaries of scale and seamlessly connect our physical built environment with human perception and response.
With a technical foundation in Engineering Science receiving MEng with 1st honours at Oxford University and training in art and design at The Royal College of Art and MIT Media Lab, Nassia is naturally driven to address technology, as τέχνη (techni) -- skill /art -- and λογία (logia) -- reason / science. She teaches as a University Professor and Course Master at the Design Research Laboratory of the Architectural Association School of Architecture in London. Her work has been awarded and exhibited internationally (incl. V&A, Dezeen Studio of the Year) and is part of the pioneering leading group of experiential artists SUPERPLUE, whilst in parallel her research has been awarded patents and publications.
In her pursuit of an ‘embodied intelligence’ within our physical reality, she develops new platforms of material and structural logic that can create fluid interfaces for our sustained and resilient existence within nature. Without prescribing a final or definite form in her sculptures, she allows people to stretch the limits of her work in completely unexpected ways as a physical megaphone to their own discoveries.
