Makana Live in Waikīkī
Makana is a globally recognized, Grammy nominated slack key master; and has dedicated his entire career to the evolution of traditional Hawaiian music.
Last year, he stepped back from touring and releasing music… to listen,
study, and go deeper into the relationship between sound and space rather than the technique
of traditional kī hōʻalu.
"Lei Kukui" is the first (and last) glimpse of what came out of that time.
This is the last show before he turns his focus elsewhere.
Expect the energy to move: traditional Hawaiian story and mele (song), a few unreleased songs,
a puppet (no explanation needed, just come), a ukulele piece (unreleased) about the
gentrification of Hawaiʻi, and one that you’ll have to cover your kids’ ears for…. It's less like a
concert hall & more like he's playing in your living room, held in a room that seats less than 200.
There will be an exclusive opportunity to receive music that is not available to the public.
The show is held at Waikīkī Community Center - a ground-floor, fully accessible space that's
stayed rooted in kamaʻāina culture for nearly 5 decades, in a part of Waikīkī where that's
increasingly rare. Free parking, front and back.
