Minint 140-ąsias Fanios Lewando gimimo metines, Nacionalinės bibliotekos Judaikos tyrimų centras kviečia į pokalbį, skirtą šiai išskirtinei prieškario žydų virtuvės ambasadorei iš Vilniaus ir litvakų virtuvės paveldui visame pasaulyje. Renginys vyks Nacionalinės bibliotekos Renginių erdvėje, III a., spalio 15 d. 19 val.

Food as Cultural Heritage: Fania Lewando and the Litvak food around the world
To celebrate the 140th anniversary of Fania Lewando’s birth, the Judaica Research Centre invites you to a meeting dedicated to this remarkable pre-war ambassador of Jewish cuisine from Vilnius and to the legacy of Litvak food around the world. The event will take place in the National Library’s Event Space, 3rd Floor, on October 15 at 7:00 p.m.
Fania Lewando was much more than a restaurateur and author of one of the most significant Jewish cookbooks of her time. Through her culinary work, she contributed to the preservation and dissemination of a distinctive Jewish gastronomic tradition, rooted in the cultural life of Vilnius and shaped by the diverse communities of the region. Her culinary work was deeply embedded in the Jewish cultural life of Vilnius and offers a valuable perspective on the culinary traditions and practices of Lithuanian Jewish communities.
Our guests will examine the culinary world of Fania Lewando and the broader heritage of Lithuanian Jewish cuisine, considering how dishes and culinary traditions travelled across borders and became part of the wider history of Jewish food. The discussion will draw on historical sources, culinary literature and recipes to reconsider food as an important form of cultural heritage and a valuable source for understanding Jewish history and culture.
The meeting will offer an opportunity to rediscover Fania Lewando’s contribution to Jewish culinary culture and to reflect on the ways in which food preserves knowledge, cultural memory and a sense of place — allowing culinary traditions originating in Vilnius and the surrounding region to continue to resonate far beyond their original context.
The discussion will feature Magdalena Maślak, a researcher of Jewish culinary heritage, and Prof. Rimvydas Laužikas, a researcher of gastronomic heritage.
The discussion will be moderated by a renowed food blogger and an author of several cookbooks Nida Degutienė.
Magdalena Maślak is a cultural anthropologist, co-founder of KUCHEN Jewish Culinary Culture Foundation that focuses on the research, education and promotion of the history and traditions of Jewish culinary heritage. She is the head of the Public Program Department at the POLIN Museum in Warsaw, and founder of the TISH Jewish Food Festival. She researches Jewish culinary culture and the connections between Jewish and local cuisines.
Prof. Rimvydas Laužikas – a researcher of gastronomic heritage, professor at the Faculty of Communication at Vilnius University, and author of numerous articles – including those on the influence ofLitvak cuisine on Lithuanian culinary heritage – as well as several monographs, history textbooks, and books.
Nida Degutienė is a well-known food blogger and an author of several cookbooks. Her book „Flavors of Israel” (2014) was translated into English and Polish and was recognized as the world’s best book in the Jewish cuisine category at the international “Gourmand” Awards.
