At a time when the national rhetoric is increasingly “us vs. them,” four local musicians are celebrating the complex beauty of classical Arab music with an accessible acoustic set designed to share the form with a wider audience.LA Arts welcomes the Maine Takht Ensemble live at LA Arts, February 1st at 7pm.

Mary Hunter, Nathan Kolosko, Duncan Hardy and Eric La Perna share a love of Middle Eastern music inspired, at least in part, by the late multi instrumentalist Alan Shavarsh Bardezbanian (Al Gardner) of Bath, with whom they all studied. Individually, they have played with Middle Eastern musicians from around the world and in several Maine-based ensembles that focus on or feature the classical Arab style.
In 2002, these four accomplished musicians and music educators–who, among them, have played central faculty roles at Bates and Bowdoin Colleges, University of Southern Maine, Maine College of Art, Portland Conservatory of Music and St. Joseph’s College–came together to form Maine Takht Ensemble, named after the Arabic term for a small group playing varied instruments to create a kind of musical ecstasy in its audience.
How do they do that? Where most Western listeners are used to music that centers on chords and harmony, classical Middle Eastern music is all about melody and rhythm. La Perna, on percussion, plays set rhythmic patterns characterized by the contrast between “high” and “low” sounds. Meanwhile, Kolosko (oud), Hardy (qanun) and Hunter (violin) play the same tune as one other while adding their own variations and ornamentations.
