Charpentier’s Midnight Mass
Marc-Antoine Charpentier spent much of his career in the shadow of Jean-Baptiste Lully, who held tight control over music at the court of Louis XIV. So Charpentier found his audience elsewhere, in the churches of Paris. In the early 1690s he composed a Christmas Eve Mass unlike any other, setting the sacred text to the cheerful carols, or noëls, that Parisians sang at home and in the streets.
Ensemble Correspondances and director Sébastien Daucé have made Charpentier the heart of their work since their very first recording, and their interpretations of his music have become a benchmark worldwide.
