Mahler Symphony No. 1 "Titan"

Led by Peter Oundjian, this program explores how folk traditions and lived experience shape music across cultures, moving from the rhythms of Argentina to the expansive landscapes of nineteenth-century Austria.
The evening begins with a world premiere by a Louisville Orchestra Creators Corps composer, continuing the orchestra’s commitment to new voices and music being written today. From there, Astor Piazzolla’s The Four Seasons of Buenos Aires brings a distinctly different sound world to the stage. Rooted in tango traditions, the music blends lyricism, rhythmic drive, and moments of improvisatory energy. Violinist Kerson Leong leads this string-centered work, navigating its shifting moods and complex rhythms in a performance that feels immediate and alive.
The program culminates with Symphony No. 1, “Titan” by Gustav Mahler, a symphony shaped by childhood memories, folk melodies, and the natural world. Written during summers in the Austrian countryside, the music draws on songs, dances, and pastoral imagery, building from moments of simplicity to sweeping orchestral power. Like Piazzolla, Mahler weaves popular and folk influences into a large-scale classical form, creating music that feels both personal and expansive.
Together, these works form a journey across cultures and eras, where familiar musical traditions are transformed through the shared experience of hearing them unfold live, from intimate textures to moments of all consuming sound.
