American citizen George Fissell sailed from Baltimore to Bremen on the North German Lloyd steamer Neckar. Once there he became stranded and turned to the American consular agent in Bremen for help getting home. Using consular records, you can understand and tell the story of your ancestor. The MAGS Spring Workshop will help you learn how.
So, what Happened to Georg Fissell?
In mid-July 1895 young George S. Fissell enlisted as a crew member on the North German Lloyd steamer Neckar and sailed from Baltimore to Bremen. Months later, no one in his family had heard from him. Your keen genealogical mind is likely now asking a series of questions. Did George make it home or did misfortune befall him on the voyage or once he arrived in Germany? Who helped George or was he left alone to solve this problem himself? How can I find the records that contain the answers to these questions? If you had someone like George among your ancestors, someone who encountered difficulties away from home or just seemed to vanish from the records, you would want to know what became of that person and how you could find the answer.
Discovering George’s fate will be the focus of the Mid-Atlantic Germanic Society’s (MAGS) workshop on Friday, 11 April 2025 at the Maritime Center in Linthicum MD. Learn how to use techniques to identify and extract data from records, including unindexed ones, and how to construct a work plan to find documents related to your research from multiple records creators and records series. The session will feature records MAGS has been working with as part of its Weser River Project, but you can use the skills the workshop teaches you throughout your family research.
Remember, the workshop is hybrid and MAGS will record it. This means you do not need to be onsite in Linthicum to participate when the workshop is live; it also means you can look at the workshop at your leisure for the six weeks MAGS will host the recording on the Society’s website.
