BLUME is the Berlin-based band led by trumpeter and composer Magnus Schriefl. Since its founding in 2013, it has performed on stages across Germany and around the world – including appearances at XJazz Festival, Kollektiv Nights, Jazz in der Kammer, and tours through Mozambique, Zimbabwe, and Madagascar.
Magnus Schriefl, trumpeter, composer, and bandleader, is a sound-seeking explorer driven by a deep curiosity for music around the globe. With projects such as Subtone and the Andromeda Mega Express Orchestra, he has toured four continents and worked with legends such as Hermeto Pascoal and Norma Winstone. His compositional voice and trumpet playing are shaped by melodic depth, structural openness, and a keen interest in unconventional creative intersections.
Alongside him is Ben Kraef, a German-Montenegrin saxophonist known for his expressive tone and international experience. His albums with John Patitucci and Albert “Tootie” Heath showcase the stylistic breadth of his playing, always with a strong connection to African-American jazz and saxophone legends like Sonny Rollins. As a sought-after soloist, he has performed with artists ranging from Archie Shepp to the WDR Big Band, and teaches at the Jazz Institute Berlin.
Sebastian Böhlen, one of the leading guitarists of his generation, brings both technical finesse and a distinct artistic vision to the group – often with surprising and humorous twists. His performances with Al Jarreau, David Liebman, and the hr- Bigband, as well as appearances at venues like Carnegie Hall and the Montreux Jazz Festival, underline his versatility and presence on the international scene.
Matthias Pichler, award-winning bassist from Tyrol, energizes the band with his inexhaustible joy of playing and spontaneous improvisation, thus, providing the rhythmic and energetic backbone of the band. His long-standing collaboration with Wolfgang Muthspiel and accolades such as the Hans Koller Prize and the win at the International BASS Congress reflect both his artistic excellence and global recognition.
Fabian Rösch, Berlin-based drummer originally from Munich, blends clear structures with a subtle sense of groove. Hints of Paul Motian or Jack DeJohnette occasionally surface in his otherwise distinctive approach, opening up space for nuance and dynamic interplay that draws everyone in. His collaborations with Kurt Rosenwinkel, Pablo Held, and Logan Richardson position him as a refined sonic sculpturer navigating between form and freedom.
Together, the five musicians of BLUME form a living, breathing ensemble that takes root, blossoms, and resonates with its environment – a rich, ever-evolving ground for playfulness and imagination.
