About this Event
What if you could grow the perfect boyfriend?
In , a lonely, drunken woman finds a sentient blob outside a bar and takes it home. Thus begins Maggie Su's debut novel, a masterful blend of the familiar and surreal. On February 20, the author will Zoom into Bookends & Beginnings for a conversation and Q&A about her wonderfully strange novel.
Vi Liu, a Taiwanese-American college dropout and recent dumpee, begins to shape the gooey amoeba into her dream man, feeding it sugary cereal and American pop culture. As the blob grows, it develops its own identity and desires, yielding a witty, heartfelt story about the search for love and self and what it means to be human.
Maggie Su is a writer and editor. She received a PhD in fiction from University of Cincinnati and an MFA from Indiana University. Her work has appeared in New England Review, Four Way Review, TriQuarterly Review, and elsewhere. She currently lives in South Bend, Indiana, with her partner, cat, and turtle.
Registration for this event is free, with the option to purchase a signed copy of Blob. Join us at 6:00 for Blob-themed treats (think Jell-O...) and a book group discussion, before Maggie joins us virtually from 6:30-7:00. Attendees are encouraged to read the novel before the event and bring questions for the Q&A!
