For this class we will focus on the historic method of scumbling and glazing to explore and create a beautiful work of art that appears luminous and atmospheric. Scumbling was traditionally used to paint light over dark with an opaque, broken application of paint in order to bring the lights forward visually and also build up interesting texture. Glazing was used to add darker value and color over lights and was achieved with a thin, transparent application of paint, adding depth to the shadows. In class we will work through straight line block-in, paint transfer, shadow layer for dark values, lead white layer to build up our lights and add texture, and two opaque and transparent color layers. Any skill level welcome, though previous painting experience is a plus.
