Is Sheffield really the world’s cultural home of modern football?
About this Event

Sheffield doesn’t claim to have invented the game of football, nor the rules. Equally, there isn’t a singular person, event, artefact, or location that makes Sheffield the home of football. However, during the period from 1850 to 1875, what happened around Sheffield had by far the most significant influence on the development of the game as we know it today.

In this interactive talk, Steve Ingall will take you on a journey through the sport’s history, from a tiny embryo of an idea in the surroundings of Sheffield to “play organised foot-ball”, to the colossus we know today. He’ll explore the events, people and locations that influenced its development, a sport that has gone from kick-abouts on Campo Lane, to the FIFA World Cup Final 2026 at MetLife Stadium, New Jersey in front of 83,000 spectators and worldwide TV viewing audience of 5+ billion!

Steve Ingall has been a Volunteer with Sheffield Home of Football for over two years and is the SHOF Guided Walks Coordinator for all the walks that SHOF provide. In 2026 Steve designed and led the development of the revised Lost Grounds S2 walk and two brand new walks: ‘Porterbrook’s Football History S11’ and ‘Penistone’s Football Trail S36’.

Steve also designed and developed a free guided walk specifically for the ‘Origins of Women’s Football in Sheffield’ to run in parallel with the Crucible’s ‘Ladies Football Club’ production. He is currently working to design a walk to take in the Sheffield Home of Football ‘Blue Plaques’ and hopes to have this ready for the Summer.

Before retiring Steve was a senior director in several IT businesses and delivered talks around the world to Global IT Systems and Services providers.

This forms part of the programme of events complementing the exhibition Football Art Prize which continues at Millennium Gallery until September 2026.
