Lunchtime Harmonium Concert ft. Sadakat Aman Khan

welcomes for a free lunchtime concert of Indian classical harmonium music. All are welcome at this relaxed concert.

1. Raag Ahir Bhairav (Morning Raga)

A traditional North Indian classical presentation of Raag Ahir Bhairav, a serene and meditative morning raga known for its devotional and introspective mood.

Alap – Slow, unmetered introduction exploring the melodic framework and emotional depth of the raga.

Vilambit Bandish in Ektaal (12-beat cycle) – A slow composition set to Ektaal, allowing detailed improvisation through alaap, bol development, and taans.

Drut Bandish in Teentaal (16-beat cycle) – A faster composition in Teentaal, showcasing rhythmic interplay, dynamic improvisation, and energetic conclusion.

This section highlights the depth of the Hindustani classical tradition, representing South Asian musical heritage and the Global Majority tradition.

2. Light Classical / Folk Finale – Dhun: “Anar Anar” (Afghan Folk Melody)

The programme concludes with a lively Dhun based on the popular Afghan folk melody “Anar Anar.” This piece brings a lighter, celebratory mood while retaining classical improvisational elements. The folk influence broadens the cultural landscape of the programme, reflecting musical traditions beyond the Western classical canon.

Sadakat Aman Khan is a 4th-generation musician of the Kasur Patiala Gharana tradition and an Indian classical harmonium player based in the United Kingdom. He comes from a distinguished musical lineage, being the grandson of the legendary Sangeetacharya Ustad Md. Yunus Khan and the son of renowned vocalist Ustad Sahadat Rana Khan. Trained under their guidance, he carries forward this rich heritage through his performances. Known as “Mr. Harmonium,” he presents Hindustani classical music alongside innovative fusion works, and has been performing internationally since 2010.
