Lunch & Learn: WNC Weather & Forecasting
with NCICS
Wednesday, March 18 | 11:30 - 12:30pm
This Lunch & Learn session, led by Dr. Carl Schreck from the North Carolina Institute for Climate Studies (NCICS) and Jared Rennie from NOAA's National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI) will explore the types of weather and climate extremes impacting Western North Carolina, and will also showcase tools to analyze and interpret weather forecasts. This will be followed by an interactive Q&A discussion, along with a trip to the Climate Reference Network (CRN) weather station located on the Arboretum campus. NCICS and NCEI scientists will describe the history and purpose of the CRN station, the instruments used to measure the weather, and answer any questions. Note that attendees can drive to the weather station, but a small amount of walking is necessary to access the equipment.
NOAA's National Centers for Environmental Information, or NCEI, is the Nation’s leading authority for environmental data. Scientists at NCEI manage one of the largest archives of atmospheric, coastal, geophysical, and oceanic research in the world, and provide access to thousands of climate-related products and services.
The North Carolina Institute for Climate Studies, or NCICS, is an NC State University research institute co-located with NOAA NCEI in Asheville, North Carolina. NCICS facilitates climate-related research in order to expand our understanding of the Earth system and its interactions with human activities.
