Most artists listen to music while they’re working, but Luke has turned this into his methodology for painting. He listens to a record while painting and when the painting is finished presses the record into the paint, the paint acting like coloured glue. This mass sits on silkscreened images taken from rubbish found while walking around London, including pizza boxes, oriental food packaging and the chalkboard from a café. These backgrounds provide a counterpoint for the painting: a collage triangle of records, paint and print.
The exhibition articulates and celebrates the potent relationship between art and music and employs a synaesthetic melding of the aural and the visual - to bastardise one of Malcolm McLaren’s aphorisms, “the sound of painting and the look of music”. Luke takes the colours of the record labels as a limitation for his paintings, and the formats of 7 inch and 12 inch records also create groupings of ‘single’ paintings and ‘album’ paintings. He has also researched the history and stories that surround the music, writing commentaries on his Instagram account @lukegottelier that give additional context and share the importance of the music both personally and culturally.
A painting will be played at 2pm daily for the duration of the exhibition.
Admission is free and all are welcome.
The opening of the exhibition is timed to coincide with the opening of YARMONICS festival of sound and new music in Great Yarmouth.
