LEONA’s PIZZA | Eau Claire, WI
The foundations of the songs on this album (with the exception of Mississippi River) were recorded live onto a Tascam 424 MK II over the course of four days in a small cabin on the shores of Lake Kekegama in Northern Wisconsin. Mississippi River was recorded on a single microphone in a small room in Eau Claire, WI.
The album features three improvised instrumental pieces - field recordings of birds in Arkansas - Missouri - and Wisconsin - topical - personal and tongue in cheek songwriting - alongside ethereal fingerstyle and Travis style fingerpicking - accompanied by Pedal Steel - Bass - Electric Guitar - Drums - Percussion - Sounds - and Harmony Singers.
Artists Statement on the album:
In the happening of the second rain - a remnant wind pushing the last of the water from the leaves of the Oak/ the Maple/ and the late flowers of the Linden Tree/ Giving once again to the understory/ a ruby throated hummingbird lands on the dead branch of an old willow/ perhaps to dry their heavy wings to chase once again the nectar that took so long to arrive/ two cardinals call upon their respective stoic posts/ the stand of spruce/ many blooms have come and gone - many blooms are on their way/ the world is framed in green/ for a moment/ in this brief time/
I am allowed to see it/
On the western edge of the canopy a thousand bolts of lightening break/ rage and hope/ brilliantly intertwined/ shatter in the sky/
a world with such beauty/ matched only by tragedy/ forever illuminated to the open eye/
And then I remember/
You curse this place/ at least once every season/
it came too quickly or too late for your liking/
it stayed too long or plunged into a depth too deep for swimming/
the falling could last forever but never does it ever/
Beauty never fades/ only the eyes have calloused of the beholder/
Perfect happened once but that was years ago/
And it seems only the angered can ever remember/
The march of the mud creeps to February/ In these woods of the buckthorn berry/
pruned/ black/ dangling/ the low lying fruit/
The last meal/ a bitter one/
Your shrine to the dead and dying/ Exposed by hot snow/
is a small offering/
The ash of burned branches is another/
You beg the seeds to lay dormant/ just a while longer/
This is how you ask for forgiveness/
For the unkind words you said/ during a brief moment of anger/ in the windchill/
And perhaps/ if I’ve earned it/
you will forgive me/
with hazelnuts and serviceberries/

Volouse Bio:
Tree bark, chipped paint, the sweet wrinkle of a smile, the glow of an old jukebox. It is the sounds of small details like these that characterize the kaleidoscopic music of Voulouse, a new recording project from Midwest songwriter and veteran touring artist Jacquelyn Beaupré.
