LPO Rep Presents: The Beaux Stratagem
About this Event
The Beaux’ Stratagem is a fast-paced Restoration comedy by George Farquhar about two charming but broke young men, Aimwell and Archer, who set out to find wealthy wives.
Posing as gentlemen of means, the pair arrive in the small town of Lichfield with a clever plan: Aimwell will marry a rich woman, while Archer will serve as his servant and help him pull off the scheme. But things quickly become complicated when Aimwell falls genuinely in love with Dorinda, the wealthy daughter of Lady Bountiful.
Meanwhile, Archer finds himself drawn to Mrs. Sullen, a wealthy woman trapped in an unhappy marriage to the lazy and abusive Squire Sullen. As romantic schemes, mistaken identities, highway robbery, and marital troubles collide, the two friends discover that love and happiness may be worth more than the fortunes they originally set out to steal.
Funny, bawdy, and surprisingly modern in its themes, The Beaux’ Stratagem is ultimately a story about two men trying to outsmart the world.
