Join a CAT student teaching week and delve into the requirements to make new and retrofitted buildings meet Low and Zero Carbon emission status. Through a series of lectures, discussions, and practical activities you will learn alongside our postgraduate students on our MSc courses including our Masters in Green Building and Sustainability in Energy Provision and Demand Management.
You will experience what it might be like to study on one of our postgraduate courses at CAT and gain invaluable knowledge and skills around how energy transfers in buildings can be calculated or modelled and how this can be used to optimise design for energy efficiency.

Start and finish times: starts at 10am and ends at 1pm on the last day
Fees: £700
Includes: tuition, all materials, lunch
What to bring: good boots and waterproof clothing is advised
Attendees will receive a certificate of attendance for joining the course at the end of the week. You will not be able to do the final assessment and this will not count toward any accreditation. If attendees wish to enrol on a postgraduate course at CAT and take the module within their future course, they will be able to receive a discount on tuition costs.
---What you will learn---
Rapidly reducing the energy we use to heat homes and buildings is needed if we are to lower societal emissions fast enough to rise to the challenges of climate crisis and adapt to environmental changes.
Improving energy efficiency in new and existing buildings is a crucial part of this response. In this short course, participants are introduced to a multidisciplinary approach that can be used to appraise and help inform building design.
Topics covered includes:
Energy and Mass flows in Buildings
Post occupancy evaluation of building performance
Thermal bridges
Thermal mass in buildings
Solar Gains
Airtightness, ventilation and cooling
Movement of moisture in building fabric
Relative humidity, internal moisture control and moisture buffering
Computer simulation of thermal and hygroscopic building performance
Low and zero carbon buildings, including Passivhaus
Retrofit – techniques, importance of continuity, detail
Retrofit – consumer challenges
---How will I learn---
Through pre-reading and some pre-recorded introductory lectures, live in person lectures, discussions, group activities and practical activities at CAT.
This short course is part of the teaching week for the MSc module Cities and Communities. Please be aware there may be some activities and content during the week only available to students, where an activity isn’t appropriate for the short course attendee, we will endeavour to arrange a replacement activity.
