-Explore Mound Key- Home of the Calusa Indians.
*
For thousands of years the Calusa lived on our near Mound Key— a man made island they built out of shells. This was their capital and the bay was called Escampaba. Their chief’s house could hold 2,000 people. Calusa means Fierce People in their language. They are the tribe who mortally wounded Ponce de Leon, the Spaniard who gave Florida its name.
-Diner/lunch at local restaurants- Probably Flippers
*
Sat: Sail Explore Estero Bay, sail to lunch? Sail to Picnic Island? Sail to the beaches of Lover’s Key State Park?
Lover’s Key ranks as one of the State’s most beautiful beaches. We can beach our boats and enjoy the park, we can sail to Sanibel, all dependent on the wind and weather. In the great pirate tradition of Calico Jack (who sailed here) we will all have a vote as to what we want to do—and then our illustrious commodore Pirate Dan will tell us what we are doing😎

Sun: Explore Estero Bay- depart
SHALLOW DRAFT (10 in or less) is required to sail in most areas
Sleep aboard or ashore- ability to sleep aboard is recommended.
While Estero Bay is well developed and marked. Mound Key and the camping spot on Bow tie island are not typical tourist destinations. Bow Tie camping is a small clearing and a fire ring. Picnic Island near the Sanibel causeway is much nicer but over 12 miles from the launch.
Mound Key is not developed. There is a single trail that bisects the Island. A small entrance lagoon between mile marker 16 and 18 is difficult to see. There are Rattlesnakes on the island! Use caution and stay on the trail is advised.
