About this Event
In this public lecture, Professor Paul Fiddes will explore the common ground opened up between Judaism, Christianity and Islam by the central theme of love, taking a perspective from two dualities in love. Love means the love of both God and neighbour, and it involves the relation between self-sacrificing love and self-fulfilling love. In a range of religions, love is thus seen to be both wanting the best for the other, and desire for union with the other. This has implications for both a doctrine of God and of human nature.
Professor Fiddes is Emeritus Professor in Systematic Theology at the University of Oxford. He is director of the Love in Religion Project (http://https://loveinreligion.org/), and was elected Fellow of the British Academy in 2020. In a distinguished career he has authored, edited, and co-authored more than thirty books.
This lecture is free and all are welcome. Refreshments will be available from 17:00.
This event is funded by the British Academy.
