Gigi's Story
My New Life with Parkinson’s by Jeanne Stanley
Who would have thunk?
On January 25th, I was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease, I was totally optimistic. All my friends became so worried about me. I didn’t tell many people, because they would look so sad. I would just say, “Look, I’m older now, I’m getting this, so I figure I’m just gonna die at a natural age and live my life to the fullest.
The first time I knew something was wrong was when I was performing at Cook’s Corner on July 7th, 2024. I tried to do my usual dance moves, but it just wasn’t working. That is when I knew something was different.
I now need help navigating through the challenges I face. Things that took me just minutes, like tying my shoes, can now take me three or four times as long. Sometimes I get so frustrated that I just throw them off.
The symptoms have suddenly progressed; my feet and lower legs recently went numb and I couldn’t walk. My voice isn’t me anymore. My movements are slow and clumsy. My balance is terrible and I have had several falls. And it’s silly, I know, but I get upset when I can’t even put my makeup on the way I used to. I’m having a hard time adjusting to the changes.
I want to rock, dance, and sing. Those things were such a big part of me, and I miss being able to do them the way I always have. I wish this one no one!!
I am so grateful for the love of my daughter, grandson, all my family, my great friends, my love of music, and my love of God.
So many people have stepped up for me, supported me, checked on me, encouraged me, and helped me in ways that I can’t even put into words. I want to take a moment to say thank you to everyone who has been there for me so far. Whether you have helped me directly, shared my story, donated, prayed for me, listened to me, made me laugh, or simply reminded me that I’m not alone, please know how much it means to me.
But as time has gone on, I’ve realized that I don’t have to navigate this alone.
I am so incredibly grateful for every one of you. I don’t know exactly what this new life with Parkinson’s is going to look like, but knowing I have so much love and support around me makes facing it a little less scary.
I hope to see everyone on October 25, 2026 for the Fundraiser being put on for me. See flyer for all details.
