Los Cerritos Wetlands Nature Walk : Heron Hike

Our walk will begin with a brief orientation about Los Cerritos Wetlands. We will then turn our focus to the interface between the urban edge and the Los Cerritos Wetlands buffer areas. Attendees will participate in a dialog about how can the restoration process best restore core wetland habitat while at the same time balancing the human population growth coming to Southeast Long Beach.

Tour leaders will discuss the history and ownership of various parcels within Los Cerritos Wetlands, followed by a walk towards the levee and a discussion on the reintroduction of tidal flow. After that, using service roads for oil infrastructure, we will walk to the old bridge on the levee and discuss the San Gabriel River and the future of bringing water back into the land. Then we will view the City of Long Beach owned lands, including Marketplace Marsh, and then head back to our meeting place. Bring binoculars if you have them; we will observe many different kinds of interesting wildlife.

WHERE: Meet in the driveway at the corner of 1st St and PCH in Seal Beach. Close-toed shoes required, and kids under 16 must be accompanied by an adult. There are no bathrooms along the route so please plan accordingly.

PARKING:The map below shows the new parking spots along the southwest side of 1 st Street. This side of the street is usually a “No Parking” Zone; however, parking for the nature walk is currently allowed here with a City of Seal Beach Parking Permit. You can pick up your permit from a staff member at the intersection of 1st and PCH.

If you are coming from Long Beach, turn right onto 1st Street and make a U-turn to park along the curb. If you’re coming from Seal Beach, turn left and make a U-turn to park along the curb. Please remember to return your parking pass at the end of the event. We suggest arriving at least 15 minutes early.

WHEN: Saturday, May 2nd, at 8:00 am sharp! The parking lot gate will open at 7:45 AM and close at 8:10 AM. No latecomers can be admitted, and all participants must stay for the entire walk, which will end by 10:00 AM.
