The theatrical style, with chefs performing stunts and flame tricks, gained popularity among foreign tourists and eventually spread to the United States in the early 1960s, leading to the opening of the first teppanyaki restaurant in New York City. Today, teppanyaki is a worldwide phenomenon that is often combined with a buffet in casual dining establishments.
