A July day trip to the London Wetland Centre offers a lush, wild escape from the city heat. The reserve is at its most vibrant, with boardwalks winding through meadows of blooming purple loosestrife and yellow flag iris. In the afternoon, the air hums with the iridescent wings of dragonflies and damselflies darting over the lagoons, while the "wild side" area provides a shaded canopy perfect for spotting water voles. It's a prime time for birdwatching too, as common terns dive into the lakes and newly fledged chicks venture out into the reeds for the first time. We depart at 4pm, back about 6pm.
