Annual fundraiser and long leisurely ride from LCC members across 7-9 days. Via Canterbury, Dunkerque, Gent, Brugge, Antwerp, Breda and Utrecht
The David Eales Memorial ride is an award-winning 6-8 day group charity ride from London (or Dunkerque) to Amsterdam each summer. The ride is long but leisurely, averaging 60 miles (about 100km) each day. The cycling conditions in Belgium and the Netherlands are level and pleasant, allowing riders to take in the scenery along the route.
Riders sometimes organise in groups of 4-6 with advice and support from veterans of the ride. These ebb and flow based on ride speed and interests along the way, and group members perform navigation and logistics for one another while riding.
Hostels or other accommodations are booked by the organisers, though riders are welcome to make their own arrangements in part or in whole if they wish.
Meet from 6:45 am for a 7.00 am departure from Parliament Square Gardens, London SW1P 3JX, opposite the corner of Big Ben.
Bring locks, lights and carry a spare inner tube or a puncture repair kit. Don’t overpack, as you will need less than you think. Pack what you can carry, as you will carry what you pack.
OMA Bikes will be providing support in case you need assistance with a puncture or minor repair.
As part of our agreed-upon fundraising, we will set up a fundraising page shortly.
This ride is organised by members of the London Cycling Campaign.
If you sign up for this ride, and you are unable to come, text 07422972247 or 07975612368 to let us know.
We may contact you after the ride to ask you about your experiences, and we will let you know more ways to sign up for information from the London Cycling Campaign
For a taste of what the trip is like and the scenery, you can see pictures from the 2022 ride, the 2025 ride and read about the history of the ride.
This year, an extra stop has been added to enable more time to see some of the towns and cities we visit. We will pass through or stop in Canterbury, Dover, Dunkerque, Vuerne, Brugge, Gent, Antwerp, Baarle, Breda, Utrecht, and end in Amsterdam.
We are adding on an option of Sunday in Amsterdam, with a city tour and arranged accommodation if necessary.
The overall cost per rider, including ferries, accommodation, food along the way and return journey, tends to be around £800-£1000 for an 8-day holiday for good purpose. The inital charge is a booking and confirmation deposit that goes on to start your fundraising. This is only intended as a guide and you can choose your own options or book within the group. We book shared or group accommodation as best as possible, as the camarederie is the best part of the experience and many of the hostels are an enjoyable stopover.
At the end of the ride, riders book /make their own way home. You can book a ferry, train journey, Eurostar or coach. Some coach services may require you to package your bike for transportation. Check with individual providers.
Once you sign up you will be sent details for your deposit payment of £75 and instructions regarding payment for booking your accommodation. Please read the confirmation email.
