About this Event

Historic Parks and Gardens in the UK Planning Systems

The place of historic parks and gardens in the planning system is at a turning point in 2024. The Levelling Up and Regeneration Act 2023 offered them greater protection than ever before, whilst the recent review of statutory consultees by the Department of Levelling Up, Housing and Communities shone a light on the unique work of the Gardens Trust in protecting historic parks and gardens through the planning application consultations it responds to. Within days of taking power, the new Labour government confirmed a revision of the National Planning Policy Framework, so the Gardens Trust stands poised ready to respond to whatever challenges and opportunities this poses.

Historic parks and gardens are crucial not only as a key part of our national cultural story, but also for the health and wellbeing benefits they bring to people from all backgrounds, and the pivotal role they have to play in climate emergency mitigation. It is critical that the planning system is able to protect them whilst delivering positive development change.

Join us at the Gardens Trust’s annual Historic Landscapes Assembly on 22nd October 2024 to share ideas with sector leaders and experts on this important topic.
